Cal State San Marcos defends A.I.I. volleyball title
MAYVILLE, N.D. - In the battle of the top two seeds in the 2012 State Farm Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament Saturday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, the No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos captured their second straight A.I.I. Championships with a 3-0 sweep over No. 2 seed Jamestown (N.D.). The Cougars won by the scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18 and had not lost a set during the A.I.I. Tournament.
Cal State San Marcos, No. 19 in the NAIA Volleyball national poll, raised their overall record to 28-13. Jamestown, receiving votes in the NAIA Volleyball national poll, dropped to 27-8. Both teams had secured an automatic bid to the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round on next Saturday, Nov. 17.
Both teams battled back-and-forth in the opening set. With Jamestown leading at 23-21, the Cougars rallied back and scored the final four points to earn a 25-23 first-set victory. CSSM hit .438 in the first set (17 kills with three errors in 32 attempts) while JC had a hitting percentage of .344 (15 kills with four errors in 32 attempts).
The Cougars recorded a .478 hitting percentage in the second set to earn a 25-14 victory and extended their match lead to 2-0. JC was held to .000 hitting efficiency.
Cal State San Marcos opened with a 9-3 lead in the third set. The Jimmies could get no closer than four points at 17-13 as the Cougars closed the match with an 8-5 run (25-18).
Taylor DeGraaf smashed a match-high 19 kills for the Cougars. Jaycee Arthur added nine kills. Andi Vordermann had eight kills. Nichole May had 11 digs and four service aces. Brittany Thompson had five blocks and a solo block. Alyssa Foster produced 36 set assists.
Kaitlyn Rogalla had nine kills for the Jimmies. Sarah Becker added seven kills. Katie Lee recorded 12 digs. Kelsey Deragisch had 15 assists, while Kaia Buck added nine assists.
CSSM outhit JC 44-29 in the match. The Cougars hit .375 compared to the Jimmies' .173.
Cal State San Marcos recorded eight service aces. The Cougars had eight blocks (two solo blocks and 12 block assists) while the Jimmies had four block assists (two blocks).
Both Cal State San Marcos and Jamestown will wait to hear the drawings for the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round, which beings on Saturday, Nov. 17. The opening round matches will be at 12 different campus sites across the country, announced by the NAIA. The top 11 teams in the country and Sioux City local host institutions will automatically advance to the NAIA National Volleyball Championships, presented by the CNOS Foundation, in Sioux City, Iowa at the Tyson Events Center on Nov. 27 - Dec. 1, 2012. The top eleven teams in the NAIA Volleyball final poll, and the local Sioux City host team, will be joined by the 12 winners of the opening round matches (which will be played on Nov. 17).
