Georgia Gwinnett College Wins CAC Men’s Soccer Title with Shutout
Top-seed Georgia Gwinnett College captured its first conference title since 2019 in convincing fashion on Tuesday evening. The Grizzlies knocked off five-time defending Continental Athletic Conference champion Bellevue University (Nebraska) 3-0 at GGC's Grizzly Soccer Complex.
In a fast-paced match with the teams exchanging possession of the ball, the outcome was determined early. Alejandro Contrera successfully converted a penalty kick in the second minute to give the tournament hosts the quick 1-0 advantage.
The Grizzlies (12-2-3) outshot Bellevue (10-8-2) by an 8-5 during the first half.
Midway through the second half, Errin Leak extended GGC's lead by perfectly executing a lob shot from midfield, sending the ball over Bellevue goalkeeper Kaden Simpson and inside the right goal post. The goal gave the team a 2-0 lead in the 66th minute.
Later, Djordje Djurasinovic put an exclamation point on the program's six years of frustration without a conference title by scoring in the 86th minute. It was his eighth goal of the season.
GGC placed nine of its 13 shots on goal and outshot the Bruins by a 13-9 margin.
Goalkeeper Victor Darub made four saves to post the shutout.
Bellevue's Jeronimo Zelaya Diaz led the Bruins with four shot attempts and Jeremiah Hteh added two shots in the contest.
