Lambuth upsets Clan to claim A.I.I. Championship
San Antonio, TX - The #1 seeded Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer team lost a close 0-0 (6-5 penalty kicks) decision on Saturday afternoon to the #2 seed Lambuth University Eagles in the 2008 NAIA Association of Independent Institutions Championship. With the victory Lambuth earns an automatic berth to the 2008 NAIA National Championships, while SFU was eliminated from postseason play with the loss. In an aggressive and back and forth match, the Clan had a number of opportunities to score during regulation, including a shot by senior Scott McEachern (Langley, B.C.) that was pushed wide by the Eagles defence for a corner kick. Shots were dead even at 5-5 on the afternoon, as Clan keeper Thomas Lindley (Seabright, N.S.) and Lambuth keeper Brett Born held a blank slate through regulation and the two overtime periods.
In the shutout, Lambuth missed on their first opportunity, and the Clan had made all of their shots up until the fifth and deciding chance. Anthony DiNicolo however was stopped by Born, sending the game into sudden death penalty kicks. After both teams converted on their first attempts, Lambuth beat Lindley, and Born made one final stop to earn to the victory for the Eagles.
Lambuth held the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-to-3 margin, while Born earns the victory in goal for the Eagles. The loss drops SFU to 11-5-1 on the season.
