Top Two Seeds to Play for 2025 CAC Women’s Basketball Title
The top two seeds will be playing for the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference women's basketball championship following exciting Saturday action in the postseason tournament being hosted by Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.
Top seed Northern New Mexico College picked up a 93-86 win against No. 5 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina). Tournament host and No. 2 seed Haskell Indiana Nations then defeated No. 3 seed Washington Adventist University (Maryland) 88-61 in the other semifinal game.
Northern New Mexico and Haskell Indian Nations will play for the conference title on Sunday, March 2, at 4 p.m. The winner will represent the CAC in the NAIA national tournament.
Semifinal No. 1: No. 1 Northern New Mexico College 93, No. 5 Spartanburg Methodist College 86
Top-seeded Northern New Mexico College outscored No. 5 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) by 15 points in the third quarter to pick up a 93-86 semifinal victory.
The Eagles tallied 32 points during the pivotal third quarter to build upon their four-point halftime lead.
NNMC made 12 of its 14 shots, including five of six 3-point field goals, to take 76-57 lead. Gillian Roybal led the charge with 12 points by making 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. She ended the game with 21 points.
Briana Marquez scored a team-high 31 points for the Eagles.
Spartanburg Methodist cut the deficit to nine points, at 85-76, after Krystal Johnson made a jumper with 2:44 left. The Pioneers outscored NNMC 29-13 over the final 10 minutes.
Destiny Middleton scored a game-high 32 points in the losing effort. Najah Gilliam came off the bench to score 15 points, while Kyrstal Johnson and JaiDah Liebert also had big bench roles by reaching double figures for the Pioneers.
Semifinal No. 2: No. 2 Haskell Indian Nations University 88, No. 3 Washington Adventist University 61
A big second-half performance led tournament host and No. 2 seed Haskell Indian Nations University (Kansas) past No. 3 seed Washington Adventist University (Maryland) 88-61 in semifinal action.
Haskell Indian Nations scored 26 points in the third and fourth quarters to pull away from the Shock.
A strong second quarter by WAU had cut the hosts' lead to 36-30 at halftime.
Wakiyan Irving connected on a 3-pointer to give Haskell Indian Nations a 47-37 advantage at the midway point of the third quarter. The team's lead grew to 16 points, at 62-46, after a 3-point field goal by Myona Dauphinais closing out the pivotal quarter.
Mahpiya Irving made a layup at the 6:29 mark to give HINU a 73-50 lead.
Dauphinais led the victors with 28 points and Tierzah Penn came off the bench to score 17 points. Tea Murray chipped in 11 points and Malia Jacobs rounded out the team's balanced scoring attack with 10 points.
WAU placed four players in double figures, led by Amani Ball with 15 points, while Isabela Lujan-Gonzales and Tye Queen each added 12 points. Deryanis Colon Velez added 11 points for the Shock.
