Washington Adventist, Spartanburg Methodist Collect Wins to Open 2025 CAC Women’s Basketball Championship

Washington Adventist University (Maryland) and Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) collected first-round victories on Thursday to begin the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament, being hosted by Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.

Washington Adventist, the No. 3 seed, picked up a 57-52 triumph against No. 6 seed Florida National University. Then, No. 5 seed Spartanburg Methodist defeated No. 4 seed Carolina University (North Carolina) 67-61.

The semifinal round is now set with top seed Northern New Mexico College facing No. 5 Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday, March 1. Tournament host and No. 2 seed Haskell Indian Nations plays No. 3 Washington Adventist in the other semifinal.

 

Game 1: No. 3 Washington Adventist University 57, No. 6 Florida National University 52

Washington Adventist University (Maryland) outscored Florida National University by nine points in the third quarter to score a 57-52 first-round victory on Thursday.

Isabela Lujan-Gonzales scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the decisive third quarter as the Shock overcame a 30-24 halftime deficit.

Amani Ball chipped in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory.

Washington Adventist used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to grab a 34-33 lead after Lujan-Gonzales made two free throws at the 5:51 mark. She later connected on a 3-pointer to once again give the Shock the lead, at 37-36, with 3:44 left in the period.

Ball extended WAU's lead to 44-38 after making a layup with 5:57 remaining in the contest. She made two free throws one minute later to give the team an eight-point lead, at 49-41.

FNU attempted a rally, getting within 53-49 after a 3-point field goal by Janelisse Marty Marrero at the 2:14 mark. She led the Conquistadors with 20 points. Charlette Leurs, the 2024-25 CAC Newcomer of the Year, scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the contest.

 

Game 2: No. 5 Spartanburg Methodist College 67, No. 4 Carolina University 61

JaiDah Liebert came off the bench to score 31 points while connecting on five 3-pointers in lifting Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) to a 67-61 victory against Carolina University (North Carolina) in a matchup of teams making their CAC postseason debuts.

Liebert tallied 14 points in the third quarter after scoring 11 points during a pivotal second quarter for the Pioneers.

Spartanburg Methodist overcame a slow start to outscore the Bruins 19-10 during the second 10-minute stanza to take a 28-24 halftime advantage.

Destiny Middleton added 11 points and made five of six free throw attempts in 26 minutes.

Spartanburg Methodist outscored Carolina 23-11 at the free throw line.

Carolina placed four players in double figures, led by Bianca Gonzalez and Alaysia Kidwell each having 12 points. Felesia Ondongo scored 11 points and Le'Asia Matthews added 10 points.
