Carolina’s Matthews, Northern New Mexico’s Salazar Earn Final CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Awards for 2024
Carolina University (North Carolina) junior Le'Asia Matthews and Northern New Mexico College senior Miranda Salazar have been named the last Continental Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Players of the Week for the 2024 portion of the 2024-25 season.
Matthews, the offensive recipient, turned in a pair of 20-plus scoring performances to average 22.5 points per contest last week. The guard also was efficient in shooting from the floor, connecting on 45% of all her field goals and 42% of her 3-point field goal shots.
The Fayetteville, North Carolina, native scored 24 points on 10 of 21 shooting in a 67-56 triumph against fellow CAC opponent Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) last Monday. She followed that strong performance by tallying 21 points and grabbing four rebounds in a 75-44 win against Point University (Georgia) last Wednesday.
Salazar, the Defensive Player of the Week, stuffed the statistics sheet in helping the Eagles to a pair of victories last week. The guard grabbed 10 rebounds, with eight coming on the defensive end, in a 58-51victory at North American University (Texas) last Monday.
The Alcalde, New Mexico, native followed that with four steals and six rebounds in a 63-52 win against NCAA Division II Fort Lewis College (Colorado) last Thursday. For the week, she averaged eight rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
