Mayville, Valley City eliminated in opening round

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Mayville State University and Valley City State University, two of the Association of Independent Institutions Conference representatives at the 2013 State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championships, were eliminated Wednesday in the first round.

Mayville State, going up against three-time defending national champion Northwestern (Iowa) fell 92-66, while Valley City State dropped a 79-63 decision to third-seeded Bethel (Ind.).

Hailey Longtin paced MSU (20-6) with 17 points, while Samantha Heier chipped in 14 and Angela Tauer added 13.

Northwestern had five players in double figures, with Kendra De Jong leading the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alli Dunkelberger added 18 points, while Karen Huston and Mackenzie Small each produced 14 points, and Samantha Kleinsasser ended with 11.

Despite outscoring Bethel 41-39 in the second half, Valley City could never crawl out of a 40-22 halftime deficit.

Brittany Lehner paced VCSU with 16 points, while Sierra Evans added nine and Alyssa Hummel had eight.

Laura Johnson led Bethel with 24 points and was followed by Kristen Hicks with 15 and Alyshia Harvey with 13.
