Lower Seeds Prevail on Day Two of 2025 CAC Men’s Basketball Championship

No. 5 seed Northern New Mexico College and No. 6 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) scored quarterfinal victories on Friday at the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, being hosted by Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.

Spartanburg Methodist began the day knocking off No. 3 seed Washington Adventist University (Maryland) 67-62 before Northern New Mexico defeated No. 4 seed Fisher College (Massachusetts) 93-80.

The semifinal round will have No. 8 seed Carolina University (North Carolina) facing No. 5 seed Northern New Mexico on Saturday, March 1, at 4 p.m. Then, No. 2 seed Arkansas Baptist College plays No. 6 seed Spartanburg Methodist at 6 p.m. The championship game will follow on Sunday, March 2, starting at 7 p.m.

Arkansas Baptist was the only higher seeded team to win its quarterfinal game during Thursday's action.

 

Game 3: No. 6 Spartanburg Methodist College 67, No. 3 Washington Adventist University 62

Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) closed the game on a 12-2 run over the final four minutes to rally past Washington Adventist University (Maryland) in Friday's quarterfinal action.

The Pioneers overcame a 60-55 deficit in the four minutes. Richard Rojas converted a layup off a missed free throw attempt to tie the contest, at 60-60, with 1:38 remaining.

2024-25 CAC Player of the Year Bryan Bayonne gave SMC a 62-60 lead by making a jump shot with 38 seconds left.

Washington Adventist would turn the ball over on its next offensive possession and Bayonne extended the lead to four points, at 64-60, by successfully converting two free throws with 14 seconds left.

The Shock held a 35-31 halftime lead.

Tavarez Lacy led the victors with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Bayonne chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and six steals.

Chase Cooke led WAU with 19 points, while Julian King scored 13 points and Emanuel Hylton added 11 points.

 

Game 4: No. 5 Northern New Mexico College 93, No. 4 Fisher College 80

Northern New Mexico College had five double-figure scorers, including two with 20-plus points, in defeating Fisher College (Massachusetts) 93-80 to conclude Friday's quarterfinal round play.

Nigel Quaynor led the Eagles with 23 points and Tahj-Malik Campbell registered a double-double performance with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Gabriel Gutierrez, Eloy Medina and Jesus Mendoza rounded out the balanced scoring attack with each having 12 points.

NNMC outscored Fisher 31-15 at the free throw line in the contest.

Leading 34-30 at halftime, the Eagles shot 48.6% from the floor to tally 59 points during the second 20-minute half. Quaynor led the charge with 14 second-half points and Campbell added 12 points.

Fisher also had five players in double figures, led by Ezekiel Edwards with 17 points. Jordan Whitaker came off the bench to score 15 points. Ke'Andre Penceal and Justin Covington each chipped in 12 points, while Anthony Douglas Jr. scored 10 points.
