Voorhees College Dismantles Allen University to Advance in AII Tourney

A mismatch on paper transferred to the same on the court as Voorhees College (20-8) cruised to victory over Allen University (3-25) by a final of 81-58 on Friday, March 2nd at the Eagles Nest of Life University. The victory was Voorhees' third over Allen in less than a month, as they defeated them by a 21.5 points-per-game average in their February 11th and 23rd meetings.

"I think watching the game before us between Life and Morris kind of got them to understand it's tournament time, and you've got to play hard," said Voorhees' Head Coach Michael Cheney after his team's impressive win.

Voorhees was led by their 6'6" senior forward Garland McArthur who had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. He averaged a near 20 and 10 during the regular season at 20.37 points-per-game and 9.7 rebounds, so his performance was very consistent with his regular season numbers. He was helped tremendously by fellow senior, guard Andre Datcher, who also put in 19 points of his own in the contest.

Voorhees will go on to face the #2-seeded Cal State San Marcos (18-11) in the second-game of the second-round double-header that is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Saturday, March 3rd after Life University takes on Mountain State University at 4 p.m. The winners of those contests will face-off in the AII Championship Game on Sunday, March 4th at 4 p.m. All AII tournament games will be hosted at the Eagles Nest in Marietta, Georgia.

"They've beaten some of the top teams at our level," noted Coach Cheney on tomorrow's opponent, Cal State San Marcos. "We've got to get prepared and hopefully we can correct some of the mistakes we made tonight [] and be sharper for tomorrow."

One of the keys for Life's second-half surge was raising the tempo and forcing a lot of Morris College turnovers. In fact, Life forced 31 turnovers and held Morris College to a putrid 38 percent shooting for the game. It was not surprising then what Coach Barrett would say his team would need to do in tomorrow's second do-or-die game in as many days.

"The key for us is always going to be the tempo of the game and the amount of turnovers we can force," responded Coach Barrett when asked about Saturday's game against Mountain State. Life has played Mountain State twice already this season, dropping both contests by an average of 17.5 points per game.

"It's our speed against their size, and if we can make our press go and make them make mistakes, we will have a good chance to win the game." With Life coming off their 6th win in their last 8 games, and 4 out of their last 5, they will sure have all the momentum they can on their side.
