Georgia Gwinnett College Sweeps Way to 2025 CAC Baseball Championship
Georgia Gwinnett College hit five home runs to power past Fisher College (Massachusetts) 30-0 to capture the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference Baseball Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Matthew Lee and Scott Seeker each connected on a pair of round trippers.
GGC (49-4, ranked No. 2 nationally) jumped out to a 12-0 lead through the first two innings. Lee hit a grand slam to spark a five-run opening frame. The tournament's top seed blasted three more pitches over the outfield fences an inning later with Lee and junior Tyler Martin hitting back-to-back solo homers. Seeker connected on a two-run blast earlier in the inning.
Seeker added a grand slam during the eighth inning to tie the program's single-game RBI record, driving in nine runs in the triumph. The designated hitter went 4-for-6 and scored twice in the finale.
Lee entered Sunday with just one home run this season. That total is now three after the catcher hit a home run in each of the first two innings on Sunday. He went 2-for-3 and had five RBI.
Thirteen different Grizzlies scored a run in the game, led by Paul Winland Jr. touching home plate four times to match his four-hit offensive total. Joe Quelch came off the bench to tally three hits and score three times. Jacob Bohacek went 3-for-3 and scored three runs in a reserve role.
GGC swept all three of its games in the CAC tournament, twice defeating Fisher. The team outscored the opposition 51-1 in capturing the program's sixth straight CAC championship and ninth conference title in the program's 13 seasons.
Starting pitcher Austin Testerman struck out eight batters in four scoreless innings. Reliver Wyatt Dodgens picked up the victory, improving his record to 8-0 on the season, by tossing a scoreless fifth inning. GGC's pitching staff struck out 15 batters in the game.
Fisher advanced to the championship round with a thrilling 9-6 victory against Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) earlier on Sunday. The Falcons broke a 4-4 tie by plating five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jatnier Torres cleared the bases with a double to left-center field, giving the Falcons a 9-4 advantage. Armando Torres and Yariel Salinas tallied RBI singles earlier in the eighth inning.
Spartanburg Methodist came back to mount a rally of its own in the top of the ninth inning. Matt Smith drove in a pair of runs to trim the deficit to 9-6. The Pioneers brought the potential game-tying run to the plate with one out in the frame.
Fisher turned to its bullpen and reliever Jan Melendez struck out two straight batters to secure his first save of the season. Maylo Sierra recorded 11 strikeouts across 8.1 innings to pick up his 10th win of the season.
