Georgia Gwinnett College Advances to Championship Round, Weather Alters Tournament Schedule

Top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College remained the lone undefeated team at the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference after a 11-1 seven-inning victory against No. 2 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) on Saturday at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The Grizzlies scored five times in the opening frame to win their second straight postseason game by 10 runs after playing seven innings.

Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Fisher College (Massachusetts) also used a fast start to defeat No. 3 seed Florida National University 14-3 in seven innings to remain in the double-elimination tournament.

Inclement weather postponed Saturday's third game, between Spartanburg Methodist and Fisher, until Sunday, May 4, starting at 11 a.m. The victor will advance to face GGC in the championship round at 3 p.m.

Game 3: No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett College 11, No. 2 Spartanburg Methodist College 1

Georgia Gwinnett College plated five runs in the top of the first inning to cruise to an 11-1 victory in the winner's bracket of the tournament.

Jon Ponder opened the scoring by successfully stealing home following a walk to Braxton Meguiar. Jackson Cobb followed with a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt play that scored Alex Harrell for the third run of the opening frame. Paul Winland Jr. added an RBI double to left field before Tyler Martin had another run-scoring double, extending the tournament hosts' lead to 5-0.

A few innings later, Scott Seeker and Cobb collected RBI singles, while Martin hit an RBI fielder's choice to shortstop to give GGC an 8-0 advantage.

Matthew Lee lined a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield to plate the team's 11th run of the contest.

The Grizzlies enjoyed a complete-game pitching performance for the second straight postseason game. Right hander Ben Harris, the 2025 CAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out eight batters and scattered six hits to pick up his 10th win of the season.

The middle of GGC's offensive lineup went a combined 8-for-11, scored seven runs and drove in four runs. Seeker went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three times, while Cobb, Harrell and Winland Jr. each tallied two hits in the victory. 

GGC had eight steals in the game and has now amassed 344 stolen bases for the season, which is the most ever recorded by a team across all collegiate divisions. Ponder had three steals in Saturday's game.

Spartanburg Methodist's Justin Dawkins, the 2025 CAC Freshman of the Year, went 2-for-2 in the contest. Matt Smith collected two hits for the Pioneers (20-28).

Game 4: No. 4 Fisher College 14, No. 3 Florida National University 3

Fisher plated eight runs with two outs in the opening frame to overcome a three-run deficit in the top of the first inning to defeat Florida National in the first elimination game.

Gilbert Gomez began the rally with a two-run triple to center field. Ruben Rodriguez tied the contest, at 3-3, following an RBI double. Then, Gabriel Rivera gave the Falcons (26-24) the lead for good with a run-scoring double. Ian Cabrera drove in a pair of runs with a double to left-center field before Yariel Salinas hit a two-run double to cap the productive inning.

Florida National (20-19) took a 3-0 lead after Adrian Roman registered an RBI double down the left field line. Christopher Rivera followed with a run-scoring single before a sacrifice fly by Ismark Gonzalez rounded out the scoring.

Fisher starting pitcher Vance Serrano settled in on the mound, scattering four hits and striking out four batters while tossing a complete game. The right hander improved to 8-4 on the season.

Amando Torres scored three times from the top of Fisher's batting order, while Rivera went 3-for-4 to lead the team's 15-hit offensive attack. Gomez drove in three runs and scored twice in Saturday's game.
