Top Seeds Win on Opening Day of 2025 CAC Baseball Championship
The top two seeds started the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament by scoring victories during Friday's action at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Tournament and top seed Georgia Gwinnett College defeated No. 4 seed Fisher College (Massachusetts) 10-0 in seven innings. Then, No. 2 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) captured its NAIA postseason debut with a 13-3 triumph in eight innings over No. 3 seed Florida National University in the nightcap.
GGC and Spartanburg Methodist will play in a winner's bracket game on Saturday, May 3, starting at 10 a.m. Fisher and Florida National are scheduled to play an elimination game at 1:30 p.m., with a third and final game of the day scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
Game 1: No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett College 10, No. 4 Fisher College 0
Starting pitcher Anthony Patterson III carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning as the top-seeded Grizzlies defeated No. 4 seed Fisher College (Massachusetts) 10-0 in seven innings.
The right hander had a perfect game through 5.2 innings. He finished the dominant outing by allowing just one hit – coming with two outs in the top of the seventh inning – and had nine strikeouts.
A six-run second inning helped the Grizzlies (47-4) pull away from the Falcons (25-24). Tyler Martin and Kyle Norton opened the productive frame with RBI singles. Later, Scott Seeker brought home a pair of runs with a double down the right field line and Jackson Cobb added a run-scoring single up the middle.
A few innings later, Jon Ponder plated two runs with a single to center field. A bases-loaded walk to Alex Harrell gave the Grizzlies a 9-0 advantage in the fifth inning. Norton collected his second RBI single of the contest one inning later.
Norton went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the team's seven-hit offensive attack. He also scored two runs and had two RBI. Cobb came home twice during the triumph.
Game 2: No. 2 Spartanburg Methodist College 13, No. 3 Florida National University 3
Jarian Pinckney and Dario Astudillo each drove in three runs to lead No. 2 seed Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) to a 13-3 victory over No. 3 seed Florida National University.
The Pioneers (20-27) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Blake Exizian opened the scoring with an RBI single to left-center field. Astudillo then added a run-scoring double to cap the productive frame.
Pinckney drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field in the fifth inning, extending the Pioneers' lead to 8-2. Astudillo followed with an RBI single.
Matt Smith went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored three times and Leo Lopez also scored three runs and registered two hits from the top of the batting order. Spartanburg Methodist outhit Florida National (20-18) by a 14-9 margin.
Travis Dannecker improved his record to 6-2 for the season, striking out six batters and scattering eight hits across 6.1 innings.
FNU was paced by Christopher Rivera's 3-for-4 hitting performance. Adrian Roman, Cesar Mora and Kevin Dominici each added two hits in the team's tournament opener.
