Haskell Indian Nations’ Strom Named 2024-25 CAC Coach of Character Award Winner

Haskell Indian Nations University (Kansas) Head Women's Basketball Coach Adam Strom has been awarded the Continental Athletic Conference's Coach of Character award for the 2024-25 season.

Strom is receiving the award for the first time in his career. He guided HINU to the 2025 CAC Women's Basketball Championship tournament title and represented the conference in the NAIA national tournament. Strom helped organize the university's hosting efforts of the CAC women's and men's basketball tournaments.

Strom demonstrated high character traits within his program by having the team visit the Lawrence Fire Station 5 during the preseason to learn aspects of courage, teamwork and service from local firefighters. Haskell Indiana Nations women's basketball players worked out with the firefighters, heard their stories about serving the community, and discussed about working together to help others.

One special moment came from Captain Nick Simon, who told HINU players that "it's gonna come down to how well you guys communicate and how strong those bonds are. This kind of stuff brings you together."

HINU women's basketball players use the "Code: Station 5" slogan as an inspirational reminder to live out the firefighters' five virtues of courage, selflessness, discipline, compassion, and teamwork.

"The respect Coach Strom demonstrates is truly remarkable," said Interim Athletic Director Zachary Wilkerson. "He treats every individual with dignity, regardless of their role or ability. I have observed him consistently modeling respect for opponents, officials and the game itself. More importantly, he cultivates an atmosphere within his team where mutual respect is paramount, leading to a cohesive and supportive unit. He teaches his players the importance of respecting diverse perspectives and backgrounds, which extends far beyond the confines of the basketball court."
