Continental Athletic Conference Places Sanctions on Bellevue Soccer
The Continental Athletic Conference (formerly the Association of Independent Institutions) has placed sanctions on the men's and women's soccer coaching staffs of Bellevue University (Nebraska) following an investigation of unsportsmanlike behaviors during the league's 2020-21 postseason tournament.
The CAC's Conduct and Ethics Committee has released the following statement about the incident:
"Women's Soccer Head Coach Tom White and Assistant Coach Amy Tilley are reprimanded for their behavior upon the conclusion of its semifinal soccer match on Friday, April 9, 2021. Inappropriate behavior and/or language will not be tolerated at future matches or further consequences will be enforced."
The report continues, "Men's Soccer Head Coach Mark Heath-Preston and Jacob Pease are suspended from coaching in the next Continental Athletic Conference Soccer Championship in which Bellevue is selected to participate. They will not be allowed on the campus of the host institution nor involved in any of the operations associated with the conference championship."
In conclusion, the report states, "The language and behaviors were reprehensible and will not be tolerated. The Conduct and Ethics Committee determined there were numerous acts of misconduct during the tournament held April 9-10, 2021, and recognize there has been a pattern of behavior from Heath-Preston that is unacceptable. The committee also states that any further misconduct at future Continental Athletic Conference events could result in additional sanctions not only for the individuals, but for Bellevue University itself."
The committee noted during the investigation that the student-athletes participating in the soccer matches acted appropriately. The Conduct and Ethics Committee intends for the sanctions levied to provide guidance for the coaches affected so that improvement and growth can occur.
